This article deals with utilizing a spreadsheet-upload function to ultimately upload all of the 1099 data onto an independent 3rd party e-filing platform (online) so you can submit 1099 forms to both the IRS and your contractors. This article does NOT refer to uploading data directly onto the IRS FIRE system to submit your 1099 forms.

Efile4biz.com is an example of a 3rd party platform tool that can be used to e-file 1099 copies to the IRS and they can also mail copies to your contractors as well.

But whatever 1099 online service you choose, this can be a wonderful time-saver, in lieu of the traditional printing out of the 1099 forms and mailing to the contractors yourself.

IRS regulations now require you to e-file IRS copies of the 1099 forms anyways, as long as you have exceeded a threshold of certain forms to submit for the calendar year. Read these regulations carefully to be sure you need to electronically file; but really, I would recommend to just e-file everything to the IRS as this is just a tremendous time-saver and it may not be worth the risk anyways to accidentally exceed the forms filing threshold as set by the IRS each year.

So, to begin with the spreadsheet-upload method, you can start by either downloading the spreadsheet template from the 1099 online services provider (for manual input), or you can download a QuickBooks Desktop plug-in (again from the 1099 online services provider) and install onto your computer to interface with your QuickBooks Desktop software. This plug-in will ultimately grab all of the relevant 1099 data from your QuickBooks Desktop file and create its own data-filled spreadsheet (within that exact same template mentioned above). Then you can upload onto the 1099 online services provider.

Once the 1099 online services provider has your spreadsheet data, you will need to proceed through a typical wizard so the online service can verify your data and you can make any on-the-fly corrections as needed. Then you simply choose whether you want to e-file only, or e-file and print, or print only. Then you proceed to the final payment screen.

It can be a simple process once you get the hang of utilizing the software plug-in to interface with your QuickBooks Desktop data. Your 1099 online services provider should have tutorial videos to assist you here.
